Great movie. I didn't like it.
The whole point of the trailer was to hide what the happening was in The Happening. So whatever follows are spoilers. Beware.
An unexplainable natural phenomenon is happening in the United States. The happening starts in parks and spreads through the city. Apparently, the plants are releasing toxins that when it enters the system of a human person, makes him suicidal.
My interpretation on this is that the plants are reacting to the human population. They are starting to see us as a threat to their collective species. The only time a person is infected by the toxins is if he is part of a significant numbered group (based on location), which is roughly 6-10. At least that's how it started.
The whole movie is about a professor trying to survive through the phenomenon. He tries his best to keep himself, his wife and his friend's daughter alive.
After the first 15 minutes of the movie, too many deaths have happened that I was wondering when it would end. I felt that way throughout the whole movie. By the end of the film, I was tired and deeply disturbed - not because of the phenomenon but because of the creative suicidal ways the movie portrayed.
I prefer feel good movies.
